So, I started a new group over on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/imaget…

The idea is a place for people to share, create and discuss the principles behind concept design, illustration and storytelling.  There will be Sketch Jams, Projects, Contests and all sorts of fun.  I just started it so, expect things to get going early in 2015.  All are welcome to join!  The only requirement is that you must draw, and share.  Anyhow, Happy Creating!

Making the switch to value and color isn't coming easy.  Takes a different way of looking at things.  But, I'm getting there, ever so slowly.  Bear with me.  :)

The Light

I dragged around for years with my pencils.  Didn't ever progress at the rate I wanted, and I knew it was all my fault.  I always preferred mechanical pencils; they just felt so direct and dramatic.

Which meant I also loved abstraction.  You have to be abstract if you're trying to describe form with lines.  So, I didn't devote much of my studies to value and edge definition, and that kinda funnelled me down a specific path, and I didn't like inking so, it was penciling for me.

But, it wasn't ink.  The unique thing about the pencil is that it uses value, even just when drawing with lines.  All that value is determined solely by the pressure you apply with your hand.  It's subtle, and made a world of a difference when I paid attention to it.

But, I didn't know any of this.  Not then.  So, I just floated.

Now, with all the studying I'm doing, from atmospheric perspective, environment design and color theroy to composition, contrast and chaos-to-control, I have begun to see things differently.

The most amazingly helpful thing I've learned so far has changed everything for me:  If you just focus on rendering the way light falls on things, you will always have a good looking image.  It's really that simple.

Everything we see is just a representation of the light bouncing around and reaching our eyes.  That's it.  Nothing else.  Work on that, and everything begins to change.

Who's to say what's good or not.  What's great, what's stellar, what's amazing?  'Society' is the easy answer but, I'm not even sure that's an answer.  'Critics' is the popular answer, although I don't know anyone who's ever listened to and agreed with one.  'We do' is the best answer, but it doesn't satisfy the greater problem of collective agreement.

No, I think good is just good.  And great is great and amazing is amazing.  Yeah, to each his own but, the fact of the matter is, most comic book fans loved The Avengers, most cooks love Wolfgang Puck and most men love Halle Berry.  Not because someone told them to, but because those things are just GOOD.

What makes them good are the little things.  It's always the little things.  The way Halle tips her head back when she laughs; the way Wolfgang uses just a hint of Sherry, nothing more; the way the Hulk smiled when Steve Rogers said "SMASH!"; at the end of the day, it's always the little things.

Maybe that's God in the Details, then.

I've begun the dive into digital painting.  It's coming much easier that I figured, considering I figured it to be nigh impossible.  For me.  Which it isn't.  I don't know if that's because I'm really smart, or because I'm just too blind to see all the flaws in the artwork.  Flaws or not, I like it, and there's only one direction to go from here.
